Description

After a bolt or screw is removed and reinstalled dozens of times, component threads can stretch and eventually pull out leaving the hardware location stripped. This is most common on motorcycle service points that are constantly addressed at regular service intervals. Primary drive hardware locations are especially susceptible to stripping because the inner and outer primary cases are aluminum while the 1/4-20 hardware is made of steel.

Helicoil kits can also be useful for similar repairs. However, a Time Sert repair is typically a more foolproof and permanent fix. The only benefit of a Helicoil kit is that the kits are less expensive. On the other hand, if a repair is required in a location where the hardware is not constantly going to be removed and replaced, a Helicoil can also be sufficient.

A Time Sert kit is an excellent investment when one is needed. These kits are expensive, but usually much cheaper than the cost of the component that is in need of repair. The kits come with a drill bit, a step drill, a tap, an insert driver, and a number of inserts. The tools can be used over and over. When inserts run out, you do not need to incur the cost of another entirely new Time Sert kit. Just purchase more steel inserts.

In this video, Mike gives us a clear demonstration of installation of a Time Sert into an inner primary case. It is important to work clean and on a secure, level surface. Installation consists of only a half a dozen steps and is relatively straightforward:

• Using the supplied drill bit, drill a straight hole and clean up chips with a vacuum or compressed air.
• Use the step drill to open up the top of the hole and clean up debris. This allows the top edge of the Time Sert to be countersunk and flush with the gasket surface.
• Tap the hole with the supplied tap and remove chips. Cutting oil can be used for ease of thread cutting.
• Apply Loctite to the Time Sert threads and apply a drop of oil to the threads of the supplied driver. Drive the insert into the component and remove the driver.
