Tech Tip: Harley Transport Mode
Mike RoenDescription
If you are trailering your Harley Davidson, it is important to put the motorcycle in Harley transport mode. If you do not put the motorcycle in Harley transport mode, the motorcycle’s security will be activated throughout the transport. The four way signal flashers will be activated every time motion is detected. The result will be a very low or a dead battery upon arrival of your destination. A dead battery is not the end of the world, but if you are planning a vacation or a trip to Bike Week, you want to roll your bike out of the trailer and go have a good time. You definitely want to avoid a set back that holds you up or leaves you behind.
Activation of transport mode is different between model years. In this video, Mike demonstrates on an M8 Softail model. This bike has a keyless ignition. It actually doesn’t even have an ignition switch. To activate transport mode on this motorcycle:
With FOB present, switch the RUN/OFF switch to RUN, then toggle the switch back to OFF. Immediately depress the left and right turn signal switches simultaneously. In the speedometer, both turn signal indicators will flash three times and “transport mode active” will be displayed. To get the bike out of Harley transport mode, switch the RUN/OFF rocker switch to RUN (with FOB present).
Hey, got a nice little tech tip for you here on Harley's new M-Eight Softail Heritage. I got a common problem. A lot of customers, they're very fortunate enough to trailer their motorcycles to Florida or Arizona or wherever they're going, Sturgis, doesn't matter. But what happens, these bikes now with this security and they don't have the fob within range of the motorcycle. They'll trailer it like a thousand miles one way, and the flashes will be going off.
It just sucks the battery down. They get there, they go to unload the motorcycle, battery's dead. They can't figure it out. Well, their salesman didn't kind of go through it with them or they didn't read their manual, but it's called transport mode. And on this particular model, this is how you do it.
It's got no key, keyless ignition. So if you're reading in the manual, fob must be present. There it is. Okay, the fob's present. Now, every year a group is kind of different.
That's why you're gonna wanna look at your owner's manual. This bike, they actually want it to set in the run position and then set it to off, simultaneously push both the buttons. Right on the dash, it says transport mode active. Flashes me three times, that lets me know it's in transport mode. Perfect, now my battery won't be dead when I get somewhere.
And now you're probably saying how do I get it out of transport mode? Got the fob present, turn the motorcycle on, it's deactivated. You're ready to roll. There you go.
