S&S Cam Install
Mike RoenDescription
There are two different ways to achieve correct gear fit:
– Take precise measurements of the new replacement cam gear and purchase the correct corresponding-size pinion gear. *Video on this procedure coming soon*
– Simply continue to run the same two gears together.
If the cam compartment was running smoothly and quietly prior to disassembly and the gears are not excessively worn, it is best to reuse the same two gears. Not only is this the easier way to go, it is also cheaper and quicker.
In order to run the original cam gear on the new cam shaft, the gear will need to be pressed off of the previous cam and pressed onto the new cam. Prior to gear removal, it is important to etch or scribe 2 lines on the gear that are in direct alignment with the cam timing notch. These marks will allow you to accurately reinstall the gear on the new camshaft. The gear that comes with the new camshaft can be pressed off and set aside.
There are specialty tools available to help aid in pressing and aligning cam gears. These tools are helpful, but they are not necessary. It is important that accurate and visible marks are scribed into the gear that is being used and that the parts are pressed together correctly. If the scribe marks are not accurately aligned after pressing the gear onto the new cam; simply press back apart and try going together again.
Next, Mike will look at setting S&S cam end play.
