Shovelhead Pre-Ride Checklist

Mike Roen
Duration:   18  mins

Description

Shovelhead model Harley-Davidsons need a bit more maintenance than the bikes of today. As Mike might say, there are more components to “babysit.” This does not necessarily mean that the motorcycle will constantly be rattling apart. There are just more regular maintenance points to be concerned with.

Tires: Inspect thread depth and side wall as well as overall tire condition. Check the tire date code.

Wheels: Inspect spokes if applicable. If wheels can be lifted off the ground, check for proper free wheeling. Try to feel for correct wheel end play.

Brakes, Front & Rear: Inspect brake pads and rotors. Check front and rear master cylinders for correct fluid condition and fluid level. Inspect brake lever feel and visually inspect for any possible brake fluid leaks.

Throttle: Inspect for proper throttle operation with handlebars at full left, full right, and centered.

Clutch: Check for proper clutch lever feel. Make sure that the clutch does not slip or “creep.” Also make sure that you can easily shift into neutral.

Electrical: Inspect all electrical functions—front & rear brake light switches, high & low beam, running lights, signals, indicators, and speedometer backlight.

Air filter: Make sure the element is not excessively dirty. Inspect the throttle wheel and choke or enrichener cable.

Battery: Make sure that battery connections are clean and secure. Perform a quick charging system test at the battery. Verify that the charging system is not under or over charging.

Gear shift assembly: Inspect the shift lever and linkages.

Fuel system: Inspect the petcock and fuel hoses. Verify that there are no fuel leaks.

Oil system: Inspect oil tank mounts. Inspect oil hoses for possible leaks. Inspect motor oil level.

Chain: Inspect chain condition and tension. Verify that the rear sprocket is tight.

Jiffy Stand: Inspect retaining hardware and jiffy stand spring.
