Shovelhead Ignition Install
Mike RoenAll Harley Davidson motorcycles had a mechanical points ignition system until the late 1970s & early 80s. Points ignition systems consist of a mechanical weight assembly, a points (support) plate, points, and condenser. Points ignition systems work very well but they do require routine maintenance.
Upgrading to an electronic ignition system is a common upgrade for most riders who own older Harley Davidson Big Twins and Sportsters. In this video, Mike demonstrates the differences between conventional points ignition systems and electronic ignitions.
He also discusses the differences between dual fire and single fire ignitions. Best of all, Mike demonstrates the procedure for installing, wiring, and timing an electronic ignition system.
