Shovelhead Brake Fluid
Mike RoenDescription
Mike has his 1977 Shovelhead on the lift and is set up for a demonstration of rear brake fluid flush and bleed. Unlike brake rotors and pads, brake fluid maintenance seems to be an important service procedure that is frequently overlooked.
A Harley Davidson brake system should be flushed at every major service or at least every two years. Flush more frequently depending on environmental conditions. Removing the master cylinder top cover and only inspecting the condition of the fluid within the master cylinder is not sufficient.
When servicing your brake system, always be sure to inspect rotors, brake pads, brake hoses, lines, fittings, and junction blocks. Always verify brake switch function prior to your test ride.
