Description

In Part 3 of Panhead maintenance and lubrication, Kevin Baas covers the additional service points for a thorough 5k service. Who thinks of the Panhead speedometer cable? Make sure to address them all as they are commonly overlooked.

Kevin starts with Panhead speedometer cable lubrication. If the Panhead speedometer cable is neglected, a build up of corrosion or fine silt debris can cause excessive friction resulting in a broken internal cable mechanism.

In order to lubricate the Panhead speedometer cable, you must be able to access the top cable end. In order to do so; remove the dash assembly retaining nut or screw and lift off the dash. Release the speedometer from the dash plate and unthread the speedometer cable nut from the bottom side of the speedometer. Use a light spray lubricant. Spray into the end of the cable and let the lube gravity feed down inside the cable casing. Reassemble the Panhead speedometer assembly in reverse.

Next up is the timer spiral. The left hand grip, when twisted forward or back, will advance or retard the ignition timing. The grip has an internal spiral that actuates a bearing/lever assembly which, in turn, pushes or pulls on a cable. This assembly needs to be cleaned and lubricated. Loosen and remove the screw in the open end of the spiral. Turn the spiral counterclockwise to move it off of the handlebar. Visually inspect the assembly for possible damage or wear. Clean the assembly thoroughly and then lubricate with a spray grease or lube. The spiral should turn freely without any binding. Repeat the process for the throttle spiral at the opposite end of the handlebars.

Last, Kevin addresses the generator. The generator end cap is removed and the armature bearing is cleaned, inspected, and lubricated. Kevin explains what to look for when inspecting the armature and brushes. If brushes have 1/4″ of brush material or less; it is a good idea to make a plan for rebuilding or replacing the generator. The condition of the armature is also critical.

If replacing your generator, we suggest going with an American made, Cycle Electric generator.
