Panhead Air Filter Service
Kevin BaasDescription
Panhead air filter elements will vary between models, years, and aftermarket. This Panhead has a stock air cleaner cover that is retained by a single 5/16″ Phillips head screw in the center. Once removed, the Panhead air filter element and air cleaner backing plate will be visible.
The air filter can be cleaned with aerosol parts or brake cleaner and compressed air. It is also important to wipe residual oil, gasoline, debris, or any other contaminants away from the air cleaner cover, the backing plate, and surrounding area. The Panhead air filter element should be serviced, at least, every 1,000 miles. It should be serviced or inspected whenever performing a service, repair, or even a pre-ride safety inspection.
Kevin points out the importance and good working habit of checking head bolts, cylinder base nuts, and major fasteners whenever possible. Especially if an area of the motorcycle has been disassembled, exposing an area that may typically be blocked or difficult to access.
With the Panhead air filter cover removed, Kevin can now easily inspect the carburetor choke assembly as well as the carburetor butterfly. He can verify that these components are in proper working condition. The backing plate hardware can also be checked for proper torque. If backing plate hardware becomes loose, it is important to thoroughly clean the hardware and reinstall with a little bit of blue Loctite.
Kevin reinstalls the Panhead air filter cover. Cleaning & inspection of the air cleaner assembly is completed.
