Layback Plate Mount
Steve KnobleDescription
The stock Harley Davidson marker mount is practical but it is nothing much to look at and it is the same marker mount that is on majority of Harleys that you ride by or park next to.
Replacement of the stock marker mount on a Harley Davidson is not a performance upgrade. It simply looks, aesthetically, better to the majority of riders and owners.
A lay back style marker plate assembly is a nice alternative that can be installed on a number of Harley Davidson models and model years. It is relatively easy to install and can be installed with general hand tools.
Steve starts by removing his marker plate and proceeds to remove the three Phillips-head screws with a screwdriver and a 7/16″ socket.
For most Harley Davidsons, it is fairly easy to reach up inside the rear fender in order to access the retaining nuts with the 7/16″ socket.
If it is difficult to access the hardware, it may be helpful to use a flat jack to lift the motorcycle slightly.
This will help you to gain a little bit more room to work. In cases where space is very limited, it is usually better to simply remove the rear wheel.
After the plate is removed, it is always a good idea to thoroughly clean the surface of the fender prior to installation of the new marker mount.
When installing the replacement marker mount, it is vitally important to use screws that are not too long.
If screws are too long, you run the risk of damaging your rear tire.
Secure the three screws with nylock nuts or, if using regular nuts, be sure to use a little bit of blue Loctite.
Reinstall your marker plate, and you’re ready to ride.
