Ironhead Battery Install
Kevin BaasDescription
The stock Ironhead battery for this 1977 Sportster is a larger, lead / acid battery. It is perfectly fine to still run this type of battery. However, it is important that the motorcycle charging system is functioning properly. If the regulator rectifier allows for an over charging condition, a conventional battery will overflow acid through the battery’s overflow tube.
If a conventional battery is used, it should be looked at during regular maintenance intervals and pre-ride inspections. A benefit of running a full size, conventional battery is that the battery will fit properly inside the battery tray. Also, the battery covers will fit properly.
Kevin has opted to go with a maintenance free, AGM Ironhead battery. The only maintenance that this battery will require is checking for potentially loose connections during regular maintenance. The AGM battery is not available in the same size as the stock Sportster battery. Therefore, some packing will need to be set around the battery sides and top.
The best thing to use for securing the battery is foam or styrofoam packaging because these products absorb vibration and can not damage the battery casing. It is important to inspect battery cables and hardware every time you install an Ironhead battery. If a battery cable needs to be repaired or replaced, it should be accomplished prior to hooking up the battery and putting it into service.
Kevin installs the battery covers and retaining strap. While doing so, careful attention is paid to the positive battery post so that it can not arch out on the chrome top cover. With the battery properly installed, Kevin inspects all electrical functions.
