Harley Evo Clutch Adjustment and Primary Fluid
Mike RoenDescription
Mike begins by removing the Harley Evo primary drain plug located near the bottom, right of the primary case. The Harley primary drain plug is the same pipe thread drain plug that is used for Softail transmission fluid draining. The drain plug has a magnetic end that helps to collect any small, unwanted debris that might establish itself within the primary case.
It is a good idea to inspect any debris collected on the magnet prior to cleaning. It is good if the metallics can be identified. It is normal to have light metallics from starter shaft & starter ring gear wear. The Harley Evo derby and inspection covers are removed for Harley Evo clutch adjustment, primary chain adjustment, and fluid refill.
Mike also takes the time to remove the outer primary cover in order to give us a clearer view of the Harley Evo clutch assembly as well as clutch and primary chain adjustments. He then demonstrates the primary chain adjustment procedure. It is important that the most tight and the most loose spots of the primary chain are determined. The spark plugs are removed so that the engine can be turned over by hand. Turn the engine by turning the compensator nut with a large socket or by putting the transmission in 5th gear and turning the rear wheel after it has been elevated with a flat jack.
The primary chain can then be adjusted according to factory service manual specs. Next, Mike walks us through the Harley Evo clutch adjustment procedure. The clutch cable has to be slackened prior to making the adjustment at the clutch pack. At this time, it is always a good idea to take a little time to lubricate the clutch cable. It is good preventative maintenance. After Mike demonstrates Harley Evo adjustment at the clutch pack, the clutch cable can be adjusted. The cable is adjusted until there is only 1/8 to 3/16″ of free play in the cable.
Once the Harley Evo primary drive is replenished with fresh primary oil, Mike reinstalls the derby and inspection covers.
