Take a Ride - French Quarter to Galveston
Nate BeckDescription
The original route was 374 miles from the French Quarter in New Orleans to Galveston along I-10 for a total of six hours and twenty five minutes. I knew that with weather stops it would take much longer. Normally, I prefer to stay off main freeways as much as possible as they tend to look the same, with the same gas stations that have the same chain fast food but considering the weather and distance to travel, I opted to take the freeway.
The evening prior to the ride I was imbibing at a local watering hole off St. Peter Street and was warned by a New Orleans local that Baton Rouge traffic was terrible and if I could, get off I-10 at Hwy 30 before Baton Rouge and I could hop the river on the Plaquemine Ferry for one dollar. It would only add a small amount of time to the trip, stay out of traffic and I had never taken a bike on a ferry before. Seeing that bad weather was pushed back a day, I was all about this.
Nate will be sharing some of the rides and rallies that he attends. He will give us a behind the scenes look at the promoters, sponsors, riders, competition entrants and winners.

Welcome to Ride & Rally with Fix My Hog. Brought to you by Gatorz Eyewear. Fit, form, function, proudly made in the USA. Footwear provided by Harley-Davidson Footwear? What's up everybody I'm Nate Beck and you're watching Fix My Hog Ride & Rally 2019.
I'm here in New Orleans, picking up a bike here at EagleRider, and we're gonna be heading over to Houston and Galveston today. So let me get on my bike and we'll see you on the road. What's up everybody? And I'm back in the Twin Cities from that ride. You know, I've been riding all over the country for years and it's always been like, it might rain, it might not and I've always taken all my rain gear.
I've shown up and it's been nothing but a gorgeous ride. However, I knew that that luck would run out with this ride. The whole time coming up to the ride I was looking at forecasts and it was stating rain and wind and thunderstorms. So as I was heading out, I packed all my rain gear in my saddlebag, and you know, you're a motorcyclist. You deal with these kinda things on the road and proper preparation does prevent poor performance.
Luckily on the way out though the rain did get pushed back a day. And I was talking with someone in new Orleans the night before, and they said that the Baton Rouge traffic was just terrible. So as you're going West on the 10, they said, "Get off on the 22 "and take it to the 75 to the Plaquemine Ferry. "You can actually cross the river on a ferry "for a dollar, which is like, absolutely the way to go." If you're gonna do the route, absolutely hop on the 10, it cuts right by Lake Pontchartrain and then cuts through the bayous a little bit, and you get off on the 22 head West to the 75 North, and you just... It's hard to miss so it's just perfect on a bike hitting that.
And then once you're actually on the other side in Plaquemine you can take Highway 1 right back up to the 10 and then it's just a straight shot. And it was a great, it was great. The weather wasn't bad. Like I said, the rain and everything held off. And then once I got into Houston, I took 146 South through Clear Lake so I could stop by NASA and see all those cool museums and the shuttle.
We've made it to Houston, Texas from New Orleans and we're gonna head down to Galveston, but we can't continue without first checking out NASA and the space shuttle. And then I headed... Hooked up with I-45 headed South to Galveston, checked out the beaches. Unfortunately, when I got to Galveston that was when the rain was coming in. So I just didn't really have time to stop for lunch or anything.
But if you hang out right there by the Galveston pier or up in the Old Strand Historic District right there in Galveston, they're both awesome place to hang out, grab some food and really take in some Texas right there. But I unfortunately, because of the rain had to bounce out pretty quick. And luckily I did have all the rain gear. You know one piece of gear that I really enjoyed having was the Giddens Boot, right here from Harley-Davidson Footwear. It is awesome and it's waterproof.
It has, you know, reflective stuff on the side. So when you're running into inclement weather, you really can't have a better boot. It doesn't even have a front seam for water to get in. It's all side zip closures. So if you're looking at, you know maybe some footwear options for performance, for riding, this is the Giddens Boot from their FXRG Collection.
Absolutely the MVP of the trip, getting me back in the rain and the cold and the wind. So that's it, we're back now. And you know, you do get those trips and you do have to be prepared for inclement weather. So until next time, ride safe, wrench safe and we'll see you on the road.
