Description

Mike has covered nearly every inch of our 1988 Heritage Softail. In this video, he is winding down with just a few more simple inspections, including the Evolution electrical.

All motor mounting points need to be inspected. The top motor mount is secured to the front and rear heads and mounted to the frame’s backbone above. It is important to check the securing hex bolts for proper torque. The top motor mount is secured with 3 bolts. The upper most bolt can only be accessed when the left side fuel tank is removed. It is more common for a top motor mount to crack or loosen if the Harley has an aftermarket mounting bracket and/or hardware that is not stock. Otherwise, a stock bracket on a stock Harley engine will usually remain tight from the factory. When inspecting the top motor mount, take a minute to inspect the horn mount and Evolution electrical wired connections.

Next, inspect the front and rear motor mounting hardware for correct torque. This can be accomplished with a 9/16″ socket & combination wrench. However, on the left, rear hardware; it is easier to access the bottom nut with a 9/16″ dog bone on a 6″ extension & ratchet.

Mike takes a minute to remove the dash console in order to point out the ignition switch wiring, circuit breakers and all Evolution electrical. There are typically three or four 15 amp breakers near or beneath the dash plate. A 30 amp breaker is typically secured to the front of the rear wheel splash guard located at the front of the swingarm assembly.

Before securing the positive and negative battery connections Mike takes a moment to inspect the battery cable conditions. On a Softail, it is important that the battery is secured with a rubber strap. If the strap is stretched out or absent, it should be replaced.

With the battery installed, Mike powers up the motorcycle for an inspection of all Evolution electrical components. Inspection should include: high & low beam & high beam indicator, turn signals & turn signal indicators, neutral indicator, oil pressure indicator, horn function, front and rear brake light switches, fender lamp tips, taillight, and of course start button/starting circuit.

Mike starts up the motorcycle and completes the service of our Heritage Softail.
