Born Free Motorcycle Show 2022

Nate Beck
Duration:   10  mins

Description

The year was 2009. The motorcycle industry was centered around massive custom bike builds, crate engines, Discovery Channel, Biker Build Offs, Jesse James, and motorcycle shows in convention centers all cashing in off the custom bike boom of the early 2000’s. Far from the heart and soul of what building bikes was for many bikers with late nights in their garage with friends and boxes of parts found at various swap meets. No glitz. No glam. All underground. All motorcycle.

Without a west coast show that catered to grease monkeys, Mike Davis and Grant Peterson decided to start their own to celebrate custom bikes and the subculture that went with vintage builds. In that moment, Born Free was born.

Welcome to Ride and Rally with Fix My Hog. What's up everybody, and welcome to Fix My Hog Ride and Rally 2022. I'm Nate Beck. Dennis Santopietro, founder of... Fix My Hog. And we are here at Born Free in Southern California. The Super Bowl of custom motorcycle shows and we're gonna bring you all the action from today. Interviews, custom bikes, bands, there's even a skateboarding vert ramp. This is this place to be for custom bikes this weekend in sunny, Southern California. So welcome to Ride and Rally 2022. All right, so we're here at Born Free with Scott for Baker Drivetrain. Yup. Scott, how's it going today? Good, how you doing? Good, man, good. Your whole business plan is fixing what Harley didn't quite get right. I mean, the Baker 6-Speed is probably the core- Since- Of- Since 1998. Yeah. And we're the first people to have a 6-Speed overdrive transmission for Harley's. Yep. And we've just stuck to that. Building American made transmissions, you know? Build them right in Michigan, get our gear sourced all through the United States and keep it, you know, keep it as local as we can. Let's go take a look at that grudgebox transmission. All right, sounds good. We're at, we're checking out Danny Wilson's bike here. He's got a custom finished grudgebox. He did the finishing on it himself. The nice thing about this grudgebox transmission is it bolts right into the stock transmission case. So there's no modifications. You just take out your old one, you got the case out, you clean it out, you put the new bearings that are installed with the, you know, they come in the kit and all the gaskets and seals, you drop it back in and you get a 0.92 overdrive, which is a 8% overdrive overstock when you're in six gears. So this thing really hammers down the highway, built for big horsepower, keep 'em rocking. The one awesome thing that Baker figured out how to do, especially for the old bikes is the Baker six into four. So you're putting a six speed transmission in the place of a four speed. So that's gonna be you old knuckleheads, panheads, shovelheads and we have one right here. So can you run us through this a little bit? Yeah, so this bike was built by American Metal, uses a lot of our transmission. So this is the six into four unit here. It's a great transmission to apply, like you said, to any four speed bike. 36 up to 79, sort of set up. We even do the early 80s. This is a true overdrive transmission. So over your four speed, you're gonna get a 14% overdrive in six gear. Fifth gear would be the same as your fourth gear. So a one to one ratio in the fifth gear with this. The other thing about this is, you get a 294 first gear. So you get more grunt off the line. You can ride these knuckleheads from here, we're in outside LA right here, you can ride this thing to New York city all day long with this 6-Speed in there, bolts right into those applications with some slight modifications on some motorcycles. So if you do not have a classic bike you don't have the newer bike, you have a late Evo Early Twin Cam, Baker has you as well. Let's run through this one. That's right. That's right, so right here, we're at San Diego Custom's booth and we're looking at one of their FXR builds. So this would be a 1990 to 94 setup. We do a overdrive 6-Speed for this application and we also do a hydraulic side cover. So we do different side covers. This overdrive 6-Speed is gonna get you a 0.86, 14% overdrive in six gear. So you can really get those FXRs hauling down the highway. So tell us, where can people find more information about Baker, your products, your information? Yeah, so we are online bakerdrivetrain.com, Instagram, bakerdrivetrain. We've got Facebook, bakerdrivetrain. You can hit us up on there. We've got tech lines you can give us a call at. 517-339-3835. Check us out, give us any questions you need, so. Thanks so much, man, that's awesome. Thank you. Have a good show. Thank you. What's up everybody, so here, we're here the S&S booth in Born Free with David. David, how's it going? Hey, man. Good, how about you? Not too bad, how's the show be going for you? It's fantastic. Nice. This is easily one of our absolute favorite shows. Yeah. You know, I'm originally from California. Okay. This thing was kind of in my backyard. Even when moved to Wisconsin, we're here every year. Nice, nice. It is, like we said earlier, the Super Bowl of motorcycle shows. Oh wow, I like it. But, so what's new at S&S, man. What's going on? Got the new exhaust. Okay. We actually have a pipe for the brand new Nightshift. Okay, already? Already, yeah. Makes that thing actually sound like a motorcycle. Nice. Which it doesn't from the factory. Okay. Sorry Harley. Let's see the, we launch a two and one for Baggers. Okay. Just a month or so ago. That's actually compliant in California. A little, it's a three quarter length pipe. Have a badass full stainless, makes really good noise and you can actually buy it in California. Nice. Which is, you know, legally- It's kinda hard to do around here. Yeah, that one was a battle, for sure. Yeah. Through carb and made it happen. Yup. Nice. So we have race versions out as well. Okay. Speaking of racing, we're still contesting the King of the Baggers program. Okay. So doing pretty good with the Indian program on that. Nice. So we've got a couple of races coming up, including Brader. Okay. So that's good stuff. What other fun stuff? Bunch of stuff for Royal Enfield. Okay. Which is, that's gone really well. Yeah. You know, fun, little bike. We've actually been able to make it go very fast. So that look very good. Nice. New sportster pipe, 2 in 1 for the sporty. Makes really good power. Sounds good. So, that looks very cool. That probably covers it for the brand new stuff. We've got a new big bore kit coming out. Which, I can't really tell you about but I'm just gonna say it's a bigger big bore, for the M8 and leave it at that. Can you tell us a number? I can just, gonna say it's bigger than numbers that are out there. How about that? All right, there we go. That's all I'ma to say for now. Okay. Look for that next month. So that's gonna be dropping next month, perfect. Yep. All about making power. Yeah, it's a slip in big bore for the M8 motors that's very good. And it, will it be the biggest one on the market? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Nice. Yeah, we've been riding them all summer. Yeah? And it was very good. Nice. Yeah. That's awesome. Yeah. All right, we're here in Arlen Ness with Zach. Zach, how's it going? It's going good, we're out here in Born Free. A little hot today but we're keeping it going, ton of people, it's been a great show so far. Nice, nice. So, yeah, we're just bouncing around, checking in with the company, just seeing what's new. So what's coming down the pipeline. What can people expect to see? What can people get excited about with Arlen Ness? Well, we got a lot of parts coming, we're usually designing every single day and gotta restrain ourselves to keep, you know, not put out too much, but this year we got a bunch of new air cleaners, new breather systems. We also have a ton of rotors from oversized big break rotors, to factory size performance rotors. Build of wheels from 19 inch to 21, 18 rears. Nice. And you know, probably about 300 new part numbers for this next upcoming year. So, keeping it on the gas and trying to keep it rolling. Nice. Yeah. Nice, so where can people see all this new stuff that's coming out for you guys? Easiest way, I think is our website, it's always updated. You can also call and get a catalog as well but if you wanna jump on there on the phone, just go to arlenness.com and check out what's new. And that's that folks, Born Free 2022, Fix My Hog Ride and Rally 2022. If you guys haven't been to this show, this is a must stop on your motorcycle adventures. So until next time, ride safe, drive safe. Drive safe. And we'll see you on the road.
