Blue Ridge Parkway Trip - Day 8

Duration:   14  mins

Description

Day 8 of our trip, Day 4 on the BRP. This is our last day on the Parkway. So many people told us the views keep getting better and better as you travel south, and they were right.

Mount Mitchell

Mount Mitchell is at milepost 344 on the BRP. I’d put this high on the must-see list. At 6,684 ft, this is the highest peak in the eastern United States. It’s a bit of a climb to the observation platform but well worth the effort. We had beautiful weather that day, and the views were astounding.

Tunnel vision

Day 8 was a day VERY heavy in tunnels. 23 of them to be exact. This can be a little funky, going from full sunlight into a dark tunnel. Take your time, and don’t outdrive your vision. Check out the walls as you go through tunnels on the BRP. Some look very organic. They literally blasted a hole through the mountain to make the tunnel, and you’re looking at the “inside” of the mountain.. In other cases they made the hole, then used concrete to reinforce and line the tunnel.

Making the cut

We stopped for lunch at the Pisgah Inn and I was able to get some very interesting footage. From that viewpoint you can really see how a ledge was cut into the side of the mountain to create the Parkway, and envision the work it took to make this happen. Look for this at about 8:20 in the video.

The Parkway ends…

…at Cherokee, NC. From the end of the BRP we headed for Seveirville, TN. The BRP to Seveirville leg took us through portions of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This was also very beautiful, AND we got to see elk.

Be sure you catch the complete BRP trip.

Welcome to Ride and Rally with Fix My Hog. Here we go. We're starting our last day on the parkway. Headed for Cherokee today. And it'll be cool.

Once we get to Cherokee, we'll have done the Parkway end to end. This is a pretty good forest. 23 tunnels today. We're at the Mount Pisgah and this view gives you a really good idea of what it took them to cut the Parkway in. They literally just cut a ledge, the shelf into the side of the mountain so that the road could go there.

It's the amount of work they had to do to do this is incredible. Here we are coming up on that cut that I just shot from the balcony in Mount Pisgah. And again, I mean, this is such a great view cause you can really see, they literally just leveled out this chunk to create this apron, this ledge that goes around the mountain. Well, this is it. We just passed mile marker number 468.

Blue Ridge Parkway NN is 469 miles so Charlie and I are down to the last mile. We're gonna come up on I think 441 down here and that's gonna be our turn to go to Sevierville, Tennessee. So what a great couple of days and few days and what a great bunch of riding. And honestly, Charlie couldn't be a better partner for all this stuff, this all worked out great. So I don't know, that's it, wrapping up.

Last mile on the Parkway right now. Charlie and I are officially off the Blue Ridge Parkway and we kept calling it Severville, Tennessee, but we learned last night, it's Sevierville, Tennessee. So a couple days ago we met Frank and we were talking about he gave us this great advice and then last night, we met somebody else. And so with Frank's advice, we were gonna cut off of the Parkway just south of Asheville and cut across-- Take a little boondocking route. And then the guy we talked to last night said the downside to that is that the road from Asheville to Cherokee is one of the best parts of the Parkway.

So we made another executive decision and decided, and two, I felt like-- You started it, you better finish it. In for a penny in for a pound. Like bragging rights, it's pretty cool to be able to say we did the Blue Ridge Parkway from end to end 469 point some miles. 470 miles of nothing... There wasn't a straightaway longer than 100 yards.

And so there's a couple curves and turns in there. There were a few, that'd be interesting how many curves than 470 miles and I enjoyed the heck out of it and we're gonna do something where it's more specifically about our feeling about the Parkway and that kinda thing, I guess. But I will say when we got to the end, I was ready to be done today. It was a blast. And it was, I think Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, it's like four days of zoom, zoom, zoom, zoom, and then especially yesterday, a lot of car dodging and today a little bit more of that Sunday.

So it was just right for me. Our motorcycle tires are worn evenly on both sides. This is true, this is true. We're getting all the mileage out of those tires because we're using all the edges. So tonight we're in Sevierville in this lovely Airbnb that we blew our budget a little bit on this, but we wanted to treat ourselves in especially a nice place to stay tonight, which this was a good score.

It's amazing inside here. And the chef here has what kind of steak did you end up with? Filet mignon. Filets on the grill-- Wrapped in bacon. Twice baked potatoes.

So we've got a good dinner coming our way. And then from here to Nashville tomorrow, we'll talk about that tomorrow and well, that's it. It's gonna be good to have a beer or two and just sit down and unwind. Have a bonfire and tip over. You might think that every night we end with a beater so that we're alcoholics but we do mix in some gin and whiskey in there as well so.

That makes it okay. That's a whole different thing. I don't know. We probably need to stop there. I don't know where that's gonna go.

Probably not in a good direction. So we'll talk to you in the morning. Ciao.
