Description

Confused about the location and contents of your Harley-Davidson fuse box? Let’s take a look at a Harley-Davidson fuse box and discuss where the fuses are and what you can do to test them.

The Harley-Davidson electrical system can be intimidating, but our Electrical Systems video series here on Fix My Hog makes it easy to understand.

I know the fuse box is under the seat of my 03 softail heritage, but where is the main fuse I believe it's a 40a fuse. I've seen video saying to turn ignition on wait for light to turn off, then remove the main fuse and then the battery can be removed. Any help will be greatly appreciated

My 88 FXSTC does not appear to have a fuse box? I know the guy before me did some crazy re-wiring, I'm slowly redoing. But without a fuse box, what happens when there's a situation that would normally blow a fuse?

Hi I have a 2014 softail breakout the rear brake lights and turn signals do not work

Let's take a moment and look at fuses. The fuse box or fuse block as it's commonly referred to, is located in a number of positions depending on the year and model of your Harley-Davidson. Make sure you refer to the service manual. Locate your fuse block or junction block, before you do any diagnosis. Look through the service manual. Know what you're troubleshooting before you attempt to troubleshoot it. On this softtail, the fuse box is right under the seat. The cover for the fuse box is clearly marked. Good way, let's see you don't have this cover. Let's say for some reason somebody wiped off all the locations of the fuses. You may be having an electrical problem on the motorcycle. You just wanna verify that the fuses are all good. Nice easy way to check them. Hookup your test light to the negative side of the battery. Always check the test light to the positive side. Make sure that test lights working before you try to test anything with it. Then you can gently push, on the top of any of the fuses with the ignition off. Make sure nothing is illuminated causing excessive draw on the battery, while the motorcycle ignition is off. You'll find that in this particular softtail, these two fuses are constantly illuminated. What that tells me is their constant feed fuses to a component on the motorcycle, that must be fed constant power, even though the ignition is off. I verify those two fuses are good because I have power on both of the terminals of the fuse. If you're testing fuses, with or without the ignition switch on and you find that one half of the fuse is illuminated. The other half of the fuse is not, remove that fuse. You can check it visually. If it appears burnt or blown as it's commonly known, replace the fuse. Always use the same air bridge fuse in the location that you removed it. With the fuse removed, you can also probe directly down into the fuse holder, and make sure that it's illuminated on one side or the other, with or without the ignition switch on. I can then replace that fuse with a new one. If it's a normally keyed circuit, the ignition switch must be on. I can check both sides of the terminal. If both sides are illuminated, that means I'm getting current from the battery to the ignition switch, to the fuse in and out of the fuse, and then to the circuit that it needs to feed that eliminates all the circuitry from the front of the fuse box forward. And we need to, let's say it's a brake light bulb that's not working correctly. We need to troubleshoot from the fuse box back to the brake light socket.
