Wrecked 2001 XL1200c

I am rebuilding a wrecked 2001 XL1200c. I pulled the cam cover off without thinking to make engine removal easier. The cams and shafts all stayed in the case and the engine has not moved. Can I reinstall without pulling lifters, pushrods, etc?

Thanks, Dennis

P.S. I am experience racer, rider and mechanic for 40 years, but this is my first Harley.

Dennis,  As long as the cover will go back on without forcing it over the ends of the cams you should be fine. For future reference you can pull the cover without unloading the top end by setting the notch in the rotor cup to the 7 o’clock position. This leaves the least amount of force on the cam shafts. Do not be afraid of this air cooled engine; consider it a 1200 cc Briggs and Stratton lawn mower motor. Always use a new gasket and cam seal. (Steel shell outer is my preference)   Wrench Safe, FMH
