Do you have a video on removing and repair of the starter on a 2009 Ultra Classic? Every 4th or 5th start it produces a grinding noise, like the sprocket is not engaging properly.

Your starter clutch & gear are one piece on your year starter. Plan on replacing but not without inspection of the starter ring gear on your clutch basket. If this gear is excessively worn, it will also need to be replaced. We have a video, but it is being edited as we speak. Here is a starter rebuild video for pre 2007 starters. It should be helpful, it is similar.

Any videos on removing the starter 08 st glide
On 2012 Ultra the starter just spins but won't engage
Any threads on changing grips on a 2006 Heritage Softail please. ??
Had the same problem on my 08 Ultra. Replaced starter, ring gear, clutch basket, plates and more. The longer you let it grind the more damage the metal from the grinding will do. HD should have had a recall on this, it is very popular in those year models. Good luck, I had a $1,600.00 bill.
If after checking the starter gear you find it to be in good condition, the problem you are hearing has to do with the compensator. Replace with the SE model.
I have a 2007 heritage softail with5000. miles and when I bought it new it had a clank in the starter whennit started ,dealer said it will go away after a few miles but it never did
I have a 2011 Harley Trike my reverse is getting do you think the reverse motor is going bad
Clicking Starter? Intermittent start? I have heard so many instances regarding this problem for multiple years and models. I can advise from experience what may at times be the problem in some situations. It happens when a new set of hand grips are installed with attention to the throttle side control housing being reassembled and allowing a wire to come between the start button and its ability to fully depress making full contact. I have found if the contact come close enough it will still send a small surge to the relay and continued presses will eventually close the relay and start. So, check that start button area well when closing up the throttle housing. It is a good area to check when experiencing intermittent starting.
