HD Compensators

Question for Fix My Hog I keep hearing all this noise about inferior compensators on HDs. Did they fix this problem or am I going to have problems with mine in the future? I currently have 17500 miles on my 2013 and so far so good.

Fix My Hog Answers Your 2013 should have the, updated, S.E compensator. Unfortunately, I have read about people having problems with those as well. It is best to just be aware. If something does not sound right, or something changes (in your drive ); discontinue riding until you can thoroughly inspect.

i have a 2013 Ultra Limited and the rattling from the original compensators at 24.000 miles was extremely irritating, not to mention worrisome for the driveline. Originally thought it was valves floating. Replace stator and compensators and all is good again.

On my 2011 ultra with 60,000 miles I was being told that the occasional clunk I was hearing that the compensator needed replaced. When they replaced it, they said it wasn’t worn all that bad. I was cold later if the engine stops in a compression stroke, it will cause a kickback making the clunk. The same that you feel when you kickstart an old engine and you feel it come back against your foot.

I have a 2012 ultra classic Limited and the compensator is out on mine at almost 50,000 miles plus I have a miss I can’t figure out why it’s missing. Had all kinds of things done from a new gas filter to putting it on a Dyno and a download still has the miss and the engine light is coming on and throwing codes. Anybody else have this problem, could they compensator be causing the miss ?

I have a built 2001 TC88 to a 103 and the previous owner put in a trike kit on it and I had to " rebuild his 103 build at 115,000 miles. He put in a SE Compensator on his build but i think it is way too noisy becuse it rattles all the time. any ideas?

My 2013 Road King Classic developed a bad clunking noise on shutdown. This was at about 7,000 miles. I replaced with a baker unit and that unit was quiet until about 25,000 miles at which time it started clunking on shutdown as well. No clunking on Startup on either one. 37,000 miles on it now clunking away on shutdown.

I had the compensator replaced on warranty on my 2008 ultra. Less than 10,000 KLM it sounded like rocks in a hamster cage. I replaced it myself with a Baker Drive Line unit and never had another issue. The bike had over 100,000 KLM on it when I traded it in.
