Drain Plug with Metal Shavings

Question for Fix My Hog

I have an ’07 FLHT. I just changed the fluids. When I removed the transmission drain plug, I noticed it was covered with metal shavings. It has over 55,000 miles, and I have been changing the fluids at around 5K for a long time. I use AMSOIL.

The fine metal shavings are completely normal. They are a product of normal wear and nothing to be concerned over.

The Harley-Davidson transmission is a constant mesh transmission. That means that the hardened steel gears are constantly and directly spinning against one another. Some wear is inevitable. We suggest running a quality transmission fluid in every Harley-Davidson model. Quality fluids offer the most protection and even quiet these transmissions.

In the post it’s always saying to use quality fluids, what brands are considered quality? I use Amsoil and Royal Purple. Curious as to other brands besides H-D!

Amsoil severe gear 75-90 works, have used it in all our Harleys. Change it every 5,000.
